The Record Book: Drop 01

Every piece in this drop points at something that actually happened.

In November 1981, Walter Day opened an arcade on East Main Street in Ottumwa, Iowa, and began writing down what he saw. Not opinions. Scores. Within a year that room was where the world came to settle its arguments, and on November 30, 1982 the mayor stood up and called a small Iowa town the Video Game Capital of the World. Nobody has taken the title since.

The Record Book is about that ledger and the people who chase their way into it. The coin that bought exactly one attempt. The kill screen waiting past the last level anyone bothered to design. The eight directions on a joystick that are still the whole vocabulary. The single frame that separates a world record from a very good run. Three letters, which was all the machine ever gave you to say who you were.
