Imagine the humble town of Ottumwa, Iowa, transforming overnight into the pulsating epicenter of the video gaming world. This is exactly what happened when Ottumwa, crowned as the Video Game Capital of the World, hosted the electrifying first-ever Video Game Olympics at the Twin Galaxies International Scoreboard. All eyes were on Ottumwa as ABC-TV's "That's Incredible" captured every joystick move, every pixelated triumph for an exclusive broadcast on February 21.

Picture the suspense: Nineteen carefully selected video game titans stepping up to a grueling pentathlon featuring arcade classics. This adrenaline-fueled challenge, dubbed the "best of the best," stretched their skills to the max, testing their acumen in both slow strategy games and fast-shooting firefights.

The high-stakes showdown didn't end there. The top three warriors were whisked away to the "That's Incredible" studios in Los Angeles for a final duel on a whole new set of games. A dramatic sprint from game to game ensued, pushing competitors to reach minimum scores before bolting for the finish line.

In the end, it was Ben Gold of Dallas, TX, who outraced Darren Olson of Calgary, Canada, and Todd Walker of Milpitas, CA to the finish line, claiming the Gold medal. The race was so close that second and third place runners finished a breathless 15 seconds after Gold.

The entrants were the crème de la crème of the gaming world, many of them record-holding champions on multiple games. Hundreds of players were vetted to find those with the rare skill to compete at this lofty level.

Kickstarting the Olympics was a vibrant parade down Main St., a rousing speech by Mayor Jerry Parker, and a stirring rendition of the National Anthem. Ottumwa locals and visitors from afar donned black and white striped referee jerseys to take up the mantle of official judges.

The Video Game Olympics was made possible by the generous support from the video game industry. Technicians and industry professionals donated their time and equipment to ensure a smooth event, from setting up overhead monitors to maintaining the game machines.

The three finalists didn't just win the glory; they received complimentary subscriptions donated by Playmeter, Replay, and Joystick magazines.

This historic event truly showcased the unity, passion, and electrifying talent within the world of video gaming, setting the bar for all future competitions. Today, with this t-shirt that sports the original promotional logo, we celebrate the participants, the organizers, and the spirit of that monumental event. After all, every percentage point earned was a testament to the timeless allure of the gaming world!
